Exams: Step 2 - ADI Training

Part 1 The Theory and Hazard Perception Test

Introduction

This test is in 2 parts, you must pass both parts at the same attempt.

The Theory Exam

The test is performed on a touch screen computer system. When you enter the room you will be assigned a booth which will be monitored by the staff.

You have 90 minutes to answer all 100 questions. You are allowed 15 minutes practice time at the start of the exam to get used to answering the questions and how to use the system. To answer a question you simply touch your choice of answer from the listed answers on the computer screen. If you make a mistake you can deselect a choice and reselect a different option. You are allowed to go back to a question at any time and you can also flag questions you are unsure of to allow easier reference if you choose to come back to it later.

The questions are banded into 4 subject groups

1. Road Procedure
2. Traffic Signs, Car Control, Pedestrians and Mechanical Knowledge
3. Driving Test, Disabilities and the Law
4. Publications and Instructional Techniques

To pass you must have an overall score of 85%. However, candidates must score at least 80 in each of the bands. For example, if you score 100% in 3 bands and only 79% in the 4th band you will fail the Test.

The Hazard Perception Exam

The hazard perception part to the exam was introduced in November 2002 and the pass mark was subsequently increased in July 2003. This part of the test is taken after the Multiple Choice part and you are allowed a break of 3 minutes between the two parts. For this part of the test you will use a computer mouse and you will be shown a short tutorial before the test starts.

The hazard perception test contains a series of 14 clips lasting about 1 minute each. Every video features real road clips and there are a total of 15 scoreable hazards. 13 of the videos will contain one hazard and one will contain two. Once you see a hazard you must click the mouse button you will not gain any points for clicking outside the scoring window and you wont lose points for clicking more than once and your highest mark for each question is recoded. The earlier you spot the hazard the higher your score ranked on a scale from 1 to 5. If you are unsure, you can click more than once; repeted clicking can disqualify you from that question.

You must score at least 57 out of a maximum of 75 points to pass this element of the test. Each video will be displayed once and you cannot retake any of them.

You may take this test as many times as necessary to pass, but at £50 a go you will want to pass 1st time.

Part 2 The Eyesight and Driving Test

You must be able to read a number plate from a distance of 27.5 metres with glasses or contact lenses if you normally wear these for driving. Where the plate has the new style font with a reduced width of character, the distance is 26.5 metres. If you fail this test you will not be allowed to take the driving element of the test.

As you would expect the examiner will be looking for a candidate to drive at an advanced standard and to demonstrate a very high standard of competence. You must drive in an efficient, positive manner, showing that you have a thorough knowledge of the principles of good driving and road safety. The routes used will include roads which may carry heavy and/or fast-moving traffic, for example motorways or dual carriageways, and will include areas in and outside built-up areas.

You must satisfy the examiner on the following:

  • Expert handling of the controls
  • Application of the correct road procedure
  • Anticipation of the actions of other road users and taking the appropriate action
  • Sound judgement of speed, distance and timing
  • Consideration for the convenience and safety of other road users.

You are only allowed 3 attempts at this test, if you fail all 3 you must wait 2 years from the date you passed your part 1 test and start again by retaking the part 1 exam.

Part 3 The Test of Instructional Ability

Now that you have passed Parts 1 & 2, you will have demonstrated that you have a sound knowledge of driving, that you can apply that knowledge to your own driving, now you need to convince an examiner you can transfer that onto others.

The exam is one hour in length. It is conducted in 2 phases

  • Phase 1 - The examiner will role play a pupil who is a raw beginner or one who has limited driving skills.
  • Phase 2 - The examiner will role play a pupil who is at about test standard.

At the start of each phase the examiner will give you a brief description of the pupil, with an outline of the standard of his / her driving.

There is an element of acting here - If you can treat the examiner like a real pupil you will do well! Our course will amongst many other things show you how to teach, what the examiners are looking for & how to pitch your lessons at the correct level.

Once again you are only allowed 3 attempts at this exam.
